Section 2 • Client Ownership Standards

The Ethical Material Surplus Protocol

Strict rules regarding who owns leftover supplies, when credits are issued, and how to avoid unethical hidden inventory hoarding.

0 of 4 Standards Acknowledged
01

Mandatory Retained Attic Stock

Always leave 1–2 unopened boxes of matching tile/flooring and 1 quart of mixed wall paint with the property owner.

Dye lots and paint tint codes change between factory batches. If plumbing leaks or foundation shifts occur 18 months later, matching tiles are impossible to buy retail. The homeowner has already paid for this buffer stock.

Ethical Rule: Never strip the job site of every single leftover tile or paint can that the client paid for.
02

Full Refund / Credit for Unopened Goods

If overestimation exceeds 10% and unopened items are supplier-returnable, credit the client's final invoice.

When an over-order yields 4+ full unopened boxes of high-end tile ($65/box) or 10+ framing studs, the contractor coordinates supplier return and passes 100% of the net merchandise credit back to the client.

Ethical Rule: Surplus over-estimates are refunded to the client rather than pocketed as unearned margin.
03

Zero Hidden Resale to Other Jobs

Never bill client A for excess materials and subsequently transport them to client B's job site without an explicit refund.

Leftover client-funded lumber, tile, or insulation belongs to the client who paid the invoice. If the client requests haul-away and disposal, disclose any salvage value or provide a flat cleanup credit.

Ethical Rule: Contractor trucks must never become rolling warehouses of client-funded material.
04

Documented Batch & Storage Labeling

Clearly label leftover paints with room name, finish sheen, date, and paint formula code.

Write on the lid with a permanent marker: 'Master Bath - Sherwin Williams Repose Gray - Satin - Installed Oct 2026'. Place neatly on a high shelf in the garage or mechanical closet.

Ethical Rule: Turns leftover materials from confusing clutter into high-value emergency maintenance assets.
